tracker – On! On! On!

Tracker has done it again: At the end of March 2024, a new album titled “On!On!On!” will be released on Noise Appeal Records. Crashing guitars as always, beats like wrecking balls, and powerful bass walls are outlined by vocal lines that this time add a bit of pop sugar into the noise. It was recorded and produced by Alaska Winter and the band, and mixed by themselves.

The fact that the members of Tracker were socialized in the nineties of the last millennium, a time legendary for exciting, emotional, and offbeat guitar music, is unmistakable. On their journey to the here and now, the trio has brushed against many things, and so, if one wishes, one can hear traces of garage, krautrock, or stoner in the current release. In their second album for Noise Appeal Records, the band has moved a bit away from prog approaches and recorded 7 songs that are, by their standards, relatively catchy. With a typical casualness for Tracker, these pieces pour out a cornucopia of sounds and moods, so one will find hypnotic grooves, condensed noise, moments of light-footed beauty, and everything in between on the album. Thematically, the songs tackle interpersonal and societal entanglements without drifting into humorless hopelessness.

Ultimately, Tracker plays a type of noise rock that is fed more by a laconic stubbornness than by the desire to be edgy. This can be quite appealing in times like these.

Baits – All Filler No Killer

BAITS: All Fillers and No Killers?

Can an album title lie to you? Yes, it can. The four members of the Austrian band BAITS call their second studio album “All Filler No Killer”. Yet, what’s inside is exactly the opposite of what’s written on the outside. Is the album title a subversive critique of an aging rock star’s megalomania? It’s not exactly clear. But one thing is certain: the album contains no fillers, only killers. The quartet, centered around the magnetically charismatic frontwoman Sonja Maier, serves up 11 absolute hits on “All Filler No Killer”, oscillating between Nirvana, Weezer, Hole, Ramones, and Amyl and the Sniffers while still maintaining a unique, unmistakable identity. Punk is just the base camp. From there, the four-piece band climbs musical heights that couldn’t be more different. Whether it’s a danceable pop song, a captivating garage rock track, a harmony-rich punk anthem, or a hard-hitting number for the mosh pit – all these songs have one thing in common: they first burrow into your ear and then straight into your heart. But the brain isn’t neglected either.

It’s about power, gender, privileges, and injustices. The singer doesn’t make any prisoners, but she is always aware of one thing: the situation may be hopeless, but not always serious. “All Filler no Killer” is held together by drummer FAZO666FAZO, who also shines as an extremely competent producer. What remains is the impression that the band has evolved to a higher level. BAITS’ second effort sounds tighter, more rounded, and technically more sophisticated at every moment than its already impressive predecessor. In conclusion, “All Filler No Killer” proves that BAITS know exactly where they are headed, which is straight to the top.

Drive Moya – The Great End

Viennese trio Drive Moya make a compelling return with their second album, “The Great End”. Expanding on the unique sounds of their 2019 debut, the band takes their deep love of early 90s alternative genres as a foundation and injects it with a sharp contemporary twist. The resulting album is a rich blend of dreampop, grunge, post-rock, and shoegaze, building up a vivid tapestry of tones and moods, with each track presenting a distinct emotional journey.

The band’s songwriting takes centre stage here, with songs crafted into unique stories, from direct and unembellished indie-rock numbers to atmospherically dense post-rock events. “The Great End” balances the gentle with the energetic, creating suspenseful arcs and showcasing the band’s versatility in creating gripping musical landscapes, inviting listeners to lie back and enjoy the view.
