Letters for the Community
„Never heard anything about United Movement before, I paid a visit to this performance which was announced in a small advert; and it was so, how shall I say, horrifying ... SOUL & BODY, the two protagonists, played in this very small venue in front of 15 people ... I quote them: „Now, dear followers, it’s time to celebrate the myths which are our myths and we love them.“ ... After that they started off with a song, I think it was called „Prepare Your Flesh“, in such a tremendous volume – blood was dripping from my ears, my heart was pumping so loudly ... it was contagious and a little bit confusing ... the feeling and the way that United Movement performed the concert was inexpressible....The spirit of dionysos was in their mind“
(extract from Burnett’s letter, July 2003)

„Since this time I’ve been involved in the whole process. Be aware though. It seemed to be the case that UM has been structured in an ordinary way, but that’s not true. They’ve built up their system, propaganda, ideas, whatever, in a more complex manner.“ (extract from Burnett’s letter, September 2003)

„You want to know something about their history? Okay let’s go. It was in the year 1954. Alan Freed, the father, founded the Movement. His ambition was to start a community whose aim has been to revive the old greek tradition of flush ...“Destroy the authorities of your tunes and fuck the logos!“ was the ideological foundation. But after decades, the movement wasn’t any longer on top. On a Wednesday, 49 years later, he went to see a show of two guys, called BODY and SOUL, who had already been known for their enthusiastic appearance. That night they performed in a small club, down on Maxwell Street. Freed entered and immediately he was blown away by these guys’ intensity on stage, sweating and ecstaticly celebrating the moment, as if they were to dance with the devil himself.
Convinced by the energy of these two musicians, Alan Freed didn’t dare to hesitate and asked SOUL and BODY to carry on his Movement. Since this historical encounter the Movement has been called United Movement.“
(extract from Burnett’s letter, January 2004)
