Was uns hier die fünf Herren aus Wien auftischen ist wirklich keine leichte und schon gar nicht eintönige Kost. Auch wenn die Band immer wieder als Hardcore deklariert wird und damit zwangsläufig aktuelle Erwartungen loslöst, schaffen WBU einen technischen und musikalischen „Spagat“, der weit über aktuelle Trends hinaus geht. So trifft hier bspw. Newschool auf Screamo und Metal auf Noise und verkommt dabei in seinem Ganzen zu einem verworrenen Knäuel, welcher sich am besten noch als wütender, emotionaler und aggressiver Rock bezeichnen lässt.?Dazu gibt’s düstere Lyrics mit einem verzweifelten und wütenden Gesang, der Stellenweise vielleicht ein wenig monoton zu werden scheint, den Songs aber den nötigen Schliff verpasst.?Was also bleibt sind intelligente Songs mit dem nötigen Sicherheitsabstand zu typischen Standards und Klischees, welcher dafür aber auch etwas schwer zu verdauen sind und mitunter auf den Magen schlagen können. Perfekt also für Leute mit einem gewissen Anspruch

na da haben die fünf sympathischen jungs aus wien mit iherer 2. cd ja mal wieder ein saubere, straightes stück aus der abteilung new school hardcore vorgelegt, 5 songs, 5 mal ordentlich eins in die fresse, wenn auch mit wenigen überraschungen. vom stil her die logische fortführung ihrese vorgängers “life in colored squares”, schnell, vertrackt, metallische und fett produziert, super schönes artwork und (pluspunkt!) digipak. alle in allem gut und eine angenehme abwechslung zum in dieser schublade vorherschenden stumpfsinn, aber ich kann mir nicht helfen, so richtig vom hocker reissen tut’s mich trotzdem nicht … jungs ihr könnt das besser! ain.

As the title may predict, this is quite depressive, heavy stuff. Almost metal-free, this sounds like a mixture of 90ies new school with a touch of scandninavian hc as well as some technical details that should not be missed. Often midtempo and massive, their hoarse screamer adds the desperation they want to express through his constant shouting. Fast parts are available as well, and the mixture of both shows their technical skills of writing and performing semi-complex rythms and tracks. „defeated“ is a good example that combines those elements (and has an almost hymnic finale). From time to time, the guitars add some noise, and the drums sound like that 90ies moshcore with a quite high snare, adding a lot of bang to their sound. The overall production fits into that sound, and the digipack artwork pleases our eyes.Not totally overwhelming and even among 5 songs, there are some less interesting moments and tracks, but overall worth a look and promising as a band to look out for for sure

WHAT I MEANT #2

Ok. WBU haben ja hier schon mal gastiert und ich fand sie live sehr überzeugend. Zu der Tour im September hatten sie auch ihre neue EP Downsides dabei, um die es hier gerade geht. Beworben wird das Ganze als Newschool, wobei mich da vielleicht noch der Gesang und die Moshparts dran erinnern. Ansonsten würde ich sagen, dass die Band nen sehr eigenständigen Mix aus treibenden Rockriffs (Alter wie Kacke klingt so ne Beschreibung, also jetzt stellt euch mal was gutes drunter vor), leicht chaotischen Einflüssen und ner Portion Newschoolhardcore mit ner Spur Aggression bietet. Mir gefällts sehr gut, auch wenns keine Platte ist, die man sich einfach mal nebenher anhört sondern man sich schon ein bisschen Zeit dafür nehmen sollte, aber das macht ja gute Platten gerade oft aus.

WORLDS BETWEEN US sind schon die längste Zeit fixer Bestandteil der österreichischen Hardcore-Szene und stehen nach wie vor für hochqualitativen Hardcore auf hohem technischen Niveau. Fünf Songs bietet ihre neue EP die den schlichten Titel “downsides” trägt. Und diese fünf Songs erwischen einen voller emotionaler Härte und Präzision. Durchaus dem Newschool-Hardcore der 90er verpflichtet, ist das musikalische Spektrum der Wiener aber in vielerlei Hinsicht weiter. Fazit: Intelligenter Hardcore auf hohem Niveau ohne Plattitüden. Short sharp shock. Worlds between us are definitely one of the best hardcore bands from Austria – though I am definitely in no position to tell for sure, because what do I know about current hardcore music? But since after all that is a completely personal and subjective judgement anyway,so I might put it down. I’ll put them on a list with The Plague Mass and God Sent Us, if you urge me. But don’t force me to rank them, because I won’t no matter what.?Worlds between us get down to their thing quickly and with energy to churn out a kind of hardcore that demands terms such as crunchy and kicking for a review. But, on top of that, they are musically versatile and original enough to keep me interested, which earns them the most points on my ranking scale. Because otherwise hardcore punk that goes “born into a fucked up world, never get a chance to choose, it feels so hard to loose (sic!)” goes straight into the box of CDs that I might or might not listen to again when I find time, which will probably be the time I retire. I’d rather listen to my old records on Profane Existence for historical reasons than listen to a new band rehashing the past.?And that is not because of the so typical typo (once and for all: the verb “to lose” is written with one o only, check it in your dictionary, since it is such an important word in the whole hardcore territorry I find this should have found its way around.) but because the music bores me to death. After ten years or more of listening to hardcore, I think I heard enough of the same. Wait, I want to give some praise to this record not put down the hardcore scene. How does it come that rants always win over rational writing??“downsides” is a great hardcore record. Musically, it has a little twist of metal, enough screamo parts to keep the energy, riffage and screaming, growling vocals. For the average kind of metal fan, WBU would be too experimental anyway, to dynamic and too complicated (metal heads are usually quite simple minded-guys.) They are probably too metla for the average hardcore punk as well, but I guess the average hardcore punk is not a lot less simpleminded than the metal fan. Actually, they go hand in hand a lot. Worlds between us try to carve out their own ground, which is hard enough, and being unable to judge if they succeed, I nevertheless like that they try.?The whole five songs on here only take a quarter of an hour, and if you ask me that is the perfect length as well. The sound is crisp, crunchy, with a lot of bottom, in a word, it kicks ass. The issues they sing or scream about are mostly personal and apart from the little blandness mentioned above, they are straightforward and emotional. How do they sing on “ourselves, mirrored in windows”? “it may not be poetry, it may not be written with the best lines, but it comes from the inside, with all the anger I got.” And if so, I guess it is okay. I also like the little hint at hardcore roots in the words to the song “forgotten times, forgotten names” with “in the salad days of my youth”, in which I am able to read the names of three or maybe even four legendary hardcore bands.”

Worlds Between Us aus Österreich haben mit “Downsides” ihre neue fünf Songs und eine gute Viertelstunde dauernde EP am Start. Das gute Werk kommt im schmucken Digipack. Doch nicht nur die Verpackung, sondern vor allem der Inhalt überzeugt sehr. Die sympathischen Jungs zaubern verzweifelten Hardcore mit zahlreich vertrackten metallischen Anleihen und ner guten Dosis Noise-Parts. Sänger Jürgen schreit was das Zeug hält zu fast ausschliesslich düsteren Lyrics, voll von negativen Gefühlen gegenüber dem, was man auf der Welt vor Augen hat und erlebt. Der Sound ist sehr gut. Insgesamt ein sehr intensives und heftiges Klangerlebnis und komplett frei von Stumpfheit. Gefällt mir wirklich gut. Checkt die Homepage und die MySpace-Seite der Band ab und lasst Euch ebenfalls überzeugen. Neben Astpai nun schon die zweite österreichische Band, die ich diesen Monat kennen lerne. Beide werde ich wohl in Zukunft näher im Auge behalten. (mo) 5,5/7

WBU aus Österreich spielen guten alten New School HC, wie er besser in den 90 _ern nicht gemacht wurde. „Downsides“ ist ihre zweite EP nach diversen split 7“s und Compilationbeiträgen. Die Songs gehen mal nach vorne, mal sind sie vertrackter und der Sänger brüllt sich auf aggressivste aber manchmal etwas eintönige Art heiser. Insgesamt können sich die fünf durchaus hören lassen. Ich bin ja schon froh, dass da mal kein neumodischer Emoquatsch mit dabei ist. Danke.

Worlds Between Us sind in Wien daheim und zelebrieren auf ihrer zweiten CD nach “Life In Colored Squares” (Engineer Records, 2005) flotten, heisseren wie kehligen Hardcore, der, so scheint es, mit Leidenschaft und dem noetigen Spass an der Sache gespielt wird. Die 5 auf “Downsides” vorgestellten Stuecke klingen frisch, kraeftig und haben die noetige spielerische Wuerze (Gitarren!) um nicht in der grossen Masse an Hardcore Bands unterzugehen. Fuer ein laengeres Album allerdings muessen noch ein paar “innovativere” Momente her, um nicht eintoenig zu wirken. “Downsides” kommt im dezent gestalteten Digipack. (6/10)
