Mit ihrem neuen Album „Favorite Record“ (Noise Appeal, VÖ: 04.04.25) lädt CONVERTIBLE die Hörer:innen auf eine Reise in weite Klangräume ein. Geprägt von vielfältigen musikalischen Einflüssen und getragen von ambivalenten Texten, zeigt sich die Band so, wie man sie kennt und schätzt – eigenwillig, vielschichtig und atmosphärisch dicht.
Nach drei Jahren ist Convertible zurück mit neuer Musik. „Favorite Record“ ist bereits das achte Album der Gruppe. Die Band ist aus dem austro-amerikanischen Grunge-Trio HP Zinker hervorgegangen. Mastermind dahinter ist der gebürtige Innsbrucker Hans Platzgumer, der gemeinsam mit Hannah MacKenna, Convertible gegründet hat. Später stießen der amerikanische Bassist Chris Laine, sowie weitere Mitmusiker und Filmemacher dazu. Heute ist Convertible mehr ein Art-Kollektiv, als eine Band. Mit „Favorite Record“ gesellt sich ein weiteres Album zum weit gefächerten, musikalischen Katalog von Convertible. Darauf sind neun Lieder zu hören. Jedes einzelne davon hat das Potential zu einem Lieblingslied zu werden. Geprägt ist das Album von Jazz- und Blues-Klängen. Diese mischt die Gruppe gekonnt mit elektronischen Komponenten, die weg vom Mainstream gehen. Dadurch öffnen sich weite Klangräume. Ein breites Spektrum an Harmonien findet sich im das gesamte Album wieder. Selten greift die Band auf Wiederholungen zurück. Auch ein Touch von psychedelischen Einflüssen kann man dem Album nicht abstreiten. Verstärkt wird der Eindruck von Platzgumers Gesang, der Stellenweise ganz weit weg wirkt. Dadurch lassen sich Parallelen zu 60er-Jahre Rock-Größen, wie den Beatles nicht ganz verleugnen.
Wenn Convertible live auftritt, geschieht dies heutzutage meist zu viert. Hannes Platzgumer übernimmt den Gesang, die Keys, sowie elektronische Effekte, Chris Laine den Bass und Backing Vocals, Matthias Hämmerle die elektrische Gitarre und Michael Schneider das Schlagzeug. Außerdem ist Hannah MacKenna als Lyrikerin immer noch fester Bestandteil der Gruppe. Die Texterin hat auch das jetzige Album maßgeblich mitgestaltet. Die Lyrics von „Favorite Record“ sind oft ambivalent. Statt plakativen Phrasen, setzt sie auf malerische Sprache, die häufig viel Spielraum für Interpretationen zulassen. Das Album wird von sechs passenden Musikvideos visuell komplementiert.
„Favorite Record“ ist ein Album, das sich der Tradition der Vorgängerplatten von Convertible anschließt und den typischen Sound der Gruppe weiterträgt. Gleichzeitig ist ein frischer, neuer Wind in der Musik zu spüren. CONVERTIBLE ist die Nachfolgeband des 1995 in New York aufgelösten austro-amerikanischen Grunge-Trios HP Zinker. Mastermind HANS PLATZGUMER kehrte danach nach Europa zurück, widmete sich elektronischer Musik, stieg bei den Goldenen Zitronen ein, produzierte Acts wie Tocotronic und André Heller und wurde erfolgreicher Schriftsteller.
Nun ist „Favorite Record“ unter CONVERTIBLE-Flagge erschienen und gleich der Opener „Ticking & Revving“ macht deutlich, dass sich das Album nur schwerlich in eine musikalische Schublade einordnen lässt. Denn hier gibt es eine Mischung aus Jazz, Blues mit ein paar musikalischen Spritzern Latin und Popschmelz auf die Ohren. Und über all dem nölt mit hohem Wiedererkennungswert die schön melancholische (und oftmals effektsteigernd gedoppelte) Stimme von PLATZGUMER.
Irgendwie fallen einem DYLAN oder LENNON ein, wenn man dem Gesang weiter lauscht, der launig nachdenklich erzählt, schön ergänzt durch wunderbare Chorgesänge, die über dem Groove schweben („My Favourite Record”). Oder wenn die Stimme wahlweise zu Klavier und Kontrabass sinniert wie in „In The White“, das auch TOM WAITS ‚betrunkenem Piano‘ gefallen hätte. Auf der anderen Seite wird „Blip In Time“ von elektronischen Elementen getragen sowie von schnarrenden und klappernden Soundcollagen untermalt, bis selbst die Stimme im Verlaufe des Songs roboterhaft verfremdet ist.
Musikalisch werden sich zwischen Liedermacher-Vibes und EDM-Feel alle musikalischen Freiheiten genommen und sich kreativ hemmungslos ausgetobt. Egal ob schlurfender Groove mit Blues-Touch („Shrouded Trees“), jazzige Klavierballade („House Arrest“), oder eingängiger BEATLES-Pop („Stalement“), immer wieder gibt es instrumentelle und Sound-Überraschungen.
Gemeinsam ist allen Nummern nur die unverwechselbare Stimme PLATZGUMERs, die einfach hängen bleibt und von Doppelungen und mehrstimmigen Gesängen immer schön ins rechte (musikalische) Licht gerückt wird.
FAZIT: Auf „Favorite Records“ sorgt CONVERTIBLE für reichlich musikalische Abwechslung. Vor allem die Stimme von Mastermind HANS PLATZGUMER oftmals schön ergänzt durch Doppelungen und harmonische Chorgesänge plus zahlreiche musikalische Wendungen, Finessen und Soundexperimente, machen dieses Album zu einem kurzweiligen und hörenswerten Trip durch die textlich oft doppeldeutige und schräge Welt des Künstlers. Nach der bereits veröffentlichten Single ‘Ticking & Revving’, einem fiebrigen Stück zwischen Schattenjagd und Fluchtwagenromantik, legt Hans Platzgumer nun das volle Album nach – entstanden erneut in den Hügeln über Bregenz, wo zusammen mit Chris Laine ein Rückzugsort für musikalische Visionen ohne Kompromisse geschaffen wurde. Und genau so klingt auch Favorite Record: mal druckvoll und treibend, mal zurückgelehnt und tiefgründig – aber immer mit diesem eigenwilligen Mix aus künstlerischer Freiheit und handwerklicher Präzision.
Mit Titeln wie My Favorite Record, Into The Wide oder dem schon bekannten Lift the Needle wird hier kein Hitkorsett geschnürt, sondern ein musikalischer Roadtrip unternommen, der an jeder Kurve überrascht. Ergänzt wird die Studiomagie von Platzgumer und Laine durch das eingespielte Live-Gespann Michael Schneider (Drums) und Matthias Hämmerle (Gitarre), das den Sound aus der Einsiedelei direkt auf die Bühne katapultieren kann. Wenn John Lennon nicht vorzeitig abgegangen wäre, sondern mit Conor Oberst auf St. Pauli eine dezent verkaterte Indie-Combo getroffen hätte, dann, ja dann, hätte der gemeinsame musikalische Abend ungefähr so geklungen, gerochen, geschmeckt. Convertible, das war und ist das Projekt von Hans Platzgumer nach dem internationalen Erfolg mit HP Zinker. Convertible hat immerhin auch schon sieben Alben vorgelegt und beweist mittlerweile eine abgeklärte Lässigkeit, die vom ersten Takt weg überzeugt. Geschmeidige kleine Pop-Juwelen wirft uns Platzgumer hin, die keine Sekunde auf den Zeitgeist schielen. Es wird vielleicht nicht auf Dauer eine Lieblingsplatte, aber in diesem Frühling gehört sie zu den erfreulichsten Erscheinungen.

All my favorite records are diverse. Like the „Favorite Record“, that comes with nine various songs. For each of them, an artwork is lying on the carpet on the album cover, like a collection of vinyls. An ashtray and a lighter can be found between, and a hand is holding the whole scene as an image in the back, making it an infinite picture.
Mastermind behind Convertible is Hans Platzgumer, who is known e.g. for H.P. Zinker (Matador Records 001) and tours with his book „What Goes Up Must Come Down“. Even though it already includes a playlist, the „Favorite Record“ could serve as soundtrack as well while reading.
Out via Noise Appeal Records, it starts with a piano and a tangoresque rhythm in „Ticking & Revving“. The Pop approach and Bowie mood harmonize excellently. Choir parts even brighten up this danceable melodies and ‚let it shine‘. Titles like „Stalemate“ bring up different bands like Stone Sour, yet the music is more of beautiful Eels.
Several songs come with video like „House Arrest“. Isolated behind the windows of the Vorarlberg Museum, Hans Platzgumer stares down on the ‚ice pavilion‘, the ‚queen of the sun‘, the Lake Constance. Whereas the following „Shrouded Trees“ comes with organic drums, motivating to go outside like the Foo Fighters with a touch of Lenny Kravitz.
Continuing with an 80s Funk feeling like some gab&gal but Iggy Pop pulling the strings, the title „Lift The Needle“ suggests that the record would be over. Max Parovsky (Kruder & Dorfmeister, Friedberg and more) produced a partially animated video like Anton Corbijn.
Yet the encore „Blip In Time“ is awaiting, going bit back in time again. „The Warriors“ or „Piedone“ could walk on screen to this score with Dr. Opin flavor. Finally, Convertible’s „Favorite Record“ could get one of your favorites, with a lot of Soul and Jazz like David Helbock, Alex Skolnick or Bill Murray. (Steäm Machine)

Wer erinnert sich noch an die Rockband H.P. Zinker? Zwei österreichische Musiker, Hans Platzgumer und Andi Pümpel gründeten sie 1989 in New York, und 1995 löste man sich nach diversen Umbesetzungen nach einer letzten Veröffentlichung wieder auf.
Und nun Convertible, die Nachfolgeband. Auch Hans Platzgumer ist wieder mit von der Partie, nach dem Crash der damaligen Band zog er wieder zurück nach Europa, Convertible gründete sich im Jahre 2005. Aktuell ist nun die Platte Favorite Record veröffentlicht worden, die Musik klingt noch immer “amerikanisch”, wurde jedoch im Studio Hideout in Bildstein/Österreich aufgenommen.
Geprägt werden die unterschiedlich ausgeprägten Songs von der unverwechselbaren Stimme von Platzgumer (mitunter muss ich an Fergal Sharkey denken, speziell zu Zeiten der Undertones), dazu gibt es den “bandeigenen” Chor, seine Stimme, die mehrfach erklingt, plus die Backing Vocals von Chris Laine. Diese Vokal-Sequenzen verleihen den Songs einen warmen Sound und eine breitflächige Fülle. Darüber hinaus ergeben sich im Laufe der Spielzeiten immer wieder Ansätze für “Ohrwürmer”. Ist der Auftakt mit “Ticking & Revving” noch etwas “sperriger”, ein wenig meint man auch John Lennon herauszuhören, so ist “My Favorite Record” bereits ein erster Aufhänger, der sich in die Sinne bohren kann mit seiner “Gemütlichkeit”, und “Into The Wide” ist mit seiner feinschichtigen Melodienverspieltheit ein Beispiel für diese durchdachte und hochwertige Musik.
Auch schwingt hin und wieder ein Hauch von Popmusik der Siebziger durch den Raum, “Stalemate” atmet ein wenig späte Beatles, so meine ich zu vernehmen. Das mit dem Piano eingeleitete “House Arrest” läßt mich wieder an Lennon denken, das ist eine schöne harmonische und feinfühlige Ballade. Schleppender Groove erwartet mich mit “Shrouded Trees”, einen Hauch New Wave meine ich beim flotten “Watcha Doin To Me” zu bemerken, ganz anders wiederum zeigt sich das mit dem Einsatz von Elektronik spielende “Lift The Needle”, ja, und zu guter Letzt gibt es mit “Blip In Time” den mit 7:28 Minuten längsten Song, in dem auch ein wenig experimentiert wird, Soundcollagen, Verfremdungen, in etwa dergestalt, wie sich Platzgumer auch einst in dieser Richtung bewegte.
Im Gegensatz zu H.P. Zinker ist die Musik zahmer, abwechslungsreicher und mit einem hohen Pop-Anteil ausgestattet, somit letztlich auch wie eine Art Rückschau auf Altes und einer darauf basierenden Gestaltung einer weiteren musikalischen Reise, und das gut gelungen, weil die Musik auf Favorite Record mehrere “Geschmäcker” ansprechen könnte. Avevamo lasciato Hanz Platzgumer alle trame morbide e sfaccettate, cangianti e infide, di “Holst gate II”, all’alba del lockdown: era l’indimenticabile 2020, il mondo stava cambiando – giocoforza – e il disco era il consueto sfoggio di dotta personalità e musica poliedrica, melodiosa e pungente sotto strati di idee in divenire.
Quasi fosse uno spin-off di quel lavoro, consistente e denso, oggi “Favorite Record”, nove tracce per Noise Appeal Records, settimo album dal 2005 a nome Convertible, riprende, amplifica e sviluppa temi e mood del suo predecessore, ma focalizzandosi con decisione sugli aspetti più tenui e concilianti. Al solito, i riferimenti sono molteplici, e nei trentanove minuti aggraziati e gentili che scorrono placidi ed intimi su arie piacevolmente démodé si possono cogliere echi sparsi di Al Stewart e Beatles, XTC e Steely Dan, Billy Joel e Paul Simon, Supertramp e Randy Newman.
Il retrogusto – delizioso – rimanda memorie e suggestioni di un tempo discretamente lontano, un milieu patinato e vintage che sa di lp dei genitori ascoltati su un giradischi d’antan. Il risultato è – semplicemente – bello: un easy listening (si diceva così, no?) che funziona e rilassa, calma i nervi e predispone ad una notte pacifica.
Rigonfio di una strabordante ricchezza armonica, l’album sciorina una volta di più la talentuosa maestria di Platzgumer per ganci, singalong, trucchetti vari e contrappunti frizzanti sparsi ad arte con misura, raffinatezza, pacata signorilità. Lontano dal clamore e dal frastuono, pennella una musica adorabilmente desueta, condotta da un pianoforte garbato – emblematica “House Arrest” – che smussa ogni remota idea di asperità mai comparsa nella sua nutrita discografia; predilige un approccio composto, equilibrato e soffice, sublimato nella perfezione formale di “My Favorite Record”, statuaria per costruzione e groove, nella maestosa opener “Ticking & Revving”, nelle tinte Kinks di “Stalemate”, nelle atmosfere à la Joe Jackson di “Shrouded trees”.
Articolato ed ammaliante, l’album ondeggia lieve come una piuma in caduta libera, consegnandosi alla contemporaneità soltanto nei sette minuti e mezzo della conclusiva “Blip In Time”, screziata da piccoli disturbi glitch, dal battito algido della drum machine, dagli effetti in loop che stravolgono la voce in un turbine di elettronica disciplinata ed avvolgente, suggello ad un lavoro suadente e confidenziale, amabile e fascinoso, adorabilmente retrò.
